Christensen is equipped to provide his patients the urgent care you need? Learn more from your emergency dentist today.

What Dental Emergencies Look Like

Is what you’re experiencing a true emergency? Don’t delay necessary care because you think you can tough it out. In some cases, receiving prompt attention can mean the difference in saving the tooth or not. If your tooth is causing you pain, if you’ve broken something in your mouth, or if you’re bleeding from the gums or other soft oral tissues, you’ve got an emergency situation on your hand.

Some of the most common situations we treat at Robert E. Christensen DDS include:

  • Broken tooth
  • Dislodged or knocked out tooth
  • Toothache or abscess
  • Broken dental work (filling, crown, bridge, etc)
  • Something lodged between the teeth

What to Do In the Meantime

Take these three steps following any dental emergency: keep calm, control the situation, and then call us right away. We will assess your situation and schedule a time for you to come in as soon as is necessary. Our expert team will also provide tips on what to do in the meantime. In general, you should…

  • Try to stop any bleeding. Apply firm pressure with a clean gauze or cloth. If bleeding does not stop or slow after ten minutes of continuous pressure, head to the emergency room right away.
  • Control pain. As we said earlier, persistent pain in your mouth always means there’s an issue requiring attention. Call us right away, and take an over-the-counter pain medication to manage discomfort until you can make it to our office.
  • Be careful with a knocked out tooth. Don’t delay seeking treatment after a tooth has been lost. If you’re able to come into the office within two hours, chances are good we can reattach the tooth. Don’t let its root dry out — place the tooth in the empty socket or in a cup of milk or water until you can reach our office.
  • Fix broken dental work. To prevent further breakage and protect your soft oral tissues from injury, you may be able to perform a quick-fix for a broken crown, filling, or other dental work. See if toothpaste or a denture adhesive will hold it together until you can reach our office.
